The Business of Soul

“You gotta kill it! Pound every pavement. Break down every door. Slave away.”
All in order to be a success.
But if I’m human, then I think and I feel.
If I’m human, then I define success differently than every other human.
Why?
Because I am unique.
There is no other human who is the same as me.
So my definition—my interpretation—of success is mine alone.
So how do I define success?
I define it daily:
By the way I feel about and treat myself.
By the way I feel about and treat others.
How?
By being inspired by business.
The Business of Soul.
“My G-d, the soul You placed within me is pure.
You created it, You formed it, You breathed it into me, and You safeguard it within me.”
These precious words have been said every morning for millennia.
And when I say them, I remember:
This soul does not belong to another.
It is my business, and my business alone.
It defines my nature.
It defines my unique greatness.
It defines how I behave—personally and professionally.
It’s said that a good businessperson doesn’t take their work home.
I believe a great businessperson brings their home into their work.
A great leader understands that every “home” is an individual soul.
And instead of building one collective team,
The best leaders empower teams of individuals to thrive.
The best leaders give freedom to Businesses of Souls.
This came to life during a mentoring session I recently had with a Platform Partner. He looked across the table and said:
“We’re an industry powerhouse. I lead a very large team.
We’re making our numbers. Profits are up.”
(He paused.)
“So why do I feel so miserable?”
That moment stopped me cold.
You can hit your KPIs and still miss your purpose.
You can scale your business and shrink yourself.
You can grow everything—except the one thing that truly matters.
How do people become the best leaders?
When the business they build at work is in step with the one they build at home.
When the patience, freedom, love, and respect we crave for ourselves is mirrored in how we treat others:
Partners. Employees. Colleagues. Vendors. Customers.
That’s when each of us can define success in our own way—
And through that, create space for others to do the same.
