The Book That Traveled With Him Everywhere

Sometimes a thirty-minute wait time in a lobby, turns into a friendship and a moment turns into meaning.
I really put myself out there in my last post, shared a lot of heart.
The response has been overwhelming.
One of the things I included was a short list of books I love. Books that changed my life, and the lives of people I’ve worked with across all backgrounds.
That list made me think of someone I haven’t spoken to in years.
A very old friend.
A good friend.
Chris.
I first met Chris when I interviewed him at TwinMed, 21 years ago..
Within minutes, I could see he was:
Smart. Resourceful. Articulate. Willing to learn.
I hired him on the spot and told him:
“One day, you’ll run the company.”
And over the years, he absolutely has.
He grew into a true operator, overseeing many critical aspects of the distribution business with grace, strength, and strategic insight.
He’s also a phenomenal father.
For years, every Sunday, he traveled with his son to practices and games, both local and interstate, just to be there.
Now his son is a college baseball phenom.
Because presence matters.
We hadn’t spoken in a long time.
But the memory of giving him Towards a Meaningful Life came flooding back to me.
So I reached out.
And sure enough, he responded immediately.
He told me he was happy to hear from me, shared warm words about my son-in-law, who he works with…
And then he sent this photo:

His copy.
Tattered. Used. Loved.
“There isn’t a place I go without this book,” he said.“It changed my life.”
It brought tears to my eyes.
Because what I know to be true is, in fact, true:
“The way to look at the world through the Rebbe’s eyes… is the way to look at the world the way G-d sees it.”
Chris my friend, I hope we get to catch up soon.
Maybe we will record a class or conversation about these topics.
I’d love to see your family, hear how you’re doing.
And as for the half-hour wait during your interview?
If that’s what it took to meet a lifelong friend…
Then I’d say it was time well spent.
